Home composting is rewarding and fun! Composting is a natural process which involves bacteria, fungi and invertebrates breaking down organic waste and converting it into a rich and useful soil-like material.
Why should you home compost?
- It reduces the need to use peat and chemical fertilizers which can harm the environment
- It will keep you supplied with free compost which will be of great benefit to your garden and plants (If you don’t want to produce an end product there are composting units available where the compost goes directly into the ground).

Alternative Ways to Dispose of Your Garden Waste
Home composting is the most environmentally friendly way of disposing of your garden waste. However, some people have too much garden waste for their composting facilities, don’t want or are unable to compost for various different reasons. Residents in these situations can take their garden waste to one of the Household Waste Recycling Sites free of charge, where it is then taken to Veolia’s Woodlands In-Vessel Composting Facility in Whitesmith for composting.
