Caring for Real Nappies

Real Nappies are very easy to wash. There is no need to soak or pre-wash – simply put them in the washing machine and walk away!

  • Wash each nappy 2 or 3 times before first use, as this improves absorbency.
  • Store used nappies in a lidded bucket – no need to soak.
  • Wash in full loads at 40 °C to 60 °C, do not boil wash.
  • Use A-rated appliances to reduce energy and water consumption.
  • Use half the amount of detergent as you would use with your normal clothes. Your nappies will still be as clean.
  • Do not use fabric conditioner, as this reduces absorbency. A drop of white wine vinegar in the conditioner compartment, or lime scale reduction powders like Calgon can make nappies softer, especially in hard water areas.
  • Minimise tumble-drying. Nappy life is prolonged if you line dry them and it’s better for the environment.
  • Don’t iron nappies.
  • Flushable nappy liners only need to be flushed when they are soiled. If they are only wet, they can be washed and reused
  • Use Real Nappies for more than one child.
